Can beverages are becoming more and more popular, so how are the cans themselves made? How do the lids of the cans close? Today, I will take you to see the detailed production process of cans.

The cans were first invented in 1959 by ERNIE.C.FRAZE (Aimar Klinan Fraze), a DRT company in Teton, Ohio, USA.

The pop-top can is composed of two parts, the can body and the can lid, which is called a two-piece can in the industry.

Simply put, it is a rivet formed from the material of the can lid itself, riveted to the can body, and then riveted with a pull ring on the outer jacket, and formed with a suitable notch.

The following is the process of making a can:

1) Round cup punch

The thin aluminum strip is punched into a round cup by a cup punching machine. The cup punching machine is similar to a punching machine. The upper die and the lower die work together under the pressure of the machine to press the aluminum sheet through the die at the same time.

The thin aluminum strip is pressed through to form a circular aluminum sheet and then punched.

2) Stretch

The punched round cup is drawn into the shape of a high-aluminum can usually seen by a stretch machine.

The elongated aluminum can is further drawn, and the side wall of the aluminum can is thinned, and finally a tall and thin can body is formed.

In the industry, the stretching operation is generally completed in one pass through several dies of gradually decreasing size.

3) Bottom recess punching and upper edge trimming

The bottom of the cans that are usually bought generally have a concave design, mainly to hold carbonated beverages so that the can body does not expand.

Debossing is mainly done by punching with a dome tool.

After that, it is necessary to trim the uneven upper edge after deep drawing.

4) Can body cleaning and printing

Can body forming generally requires a lot of lubricating oil to complete the die, so the finished aluminum can will be very greasy, and it needs to be rinsed and dried 6 times to meet the industry standard.

The cleaned aluminum cans need to be printed and printed with different packaging.

5) Neck Down

The neck down of the can is also done by a die. But the difference is that the neck down of the can is not done in one step, it requires the use of molds of different sizes to shrink the neck of the can in turn.

Why do you need to neck down the aluminum can? It is because the can lid on the aluminum can is the most expensive, and reducing the upper part of the can body can save a lot of money. Up to now, the can lid has been shrunk from 60mm to 54mm.

Finally, after taking photos for light leakage detection, it is a formed can (without a lid).

6) Can lid forming

The can cover is also punched with an aluminum strip and punched at one time, and it is completed after spraying, drying and testing.

The pull tabs on the can lid are connected by riveting, and the lid opening is formed after the line is engraved.

7) Can Filling Sealing

After the lid and body of the can are finished, the next step is to pour the beverage into the body of the can, and then seal the lid, which is mainly divided into two steps.

First, the cover of the can lid is curled and matched with the flange of the can body and joined under the action of the first seam roller.

After joining, the second seam roller squeezes and seals the seam.

After so many steps, a canned drink is finally finished! If have any interest about beverage canning machine, welcome to contact fillex via www.fillex-canning.com or Jessy@fillex-packer.com
